English is without question the most common language in the United States. Those who speak it are the dominant group. However, a lot of English speakers feel threatened when American citizens speak other languages -- especially Spanish. This is a form of racism against immigrants. Underlying this racism is a fear that those in control might lose hegemony. I guess for some people options are scary. Having the choice to "press 2 for Spanish" indicates that a decent amount of people are speaking Spanish -- despite the fact that it's still "press 1 for English."English only speakers feel threatened, despite their clear dominance in society. An anticipatory strategy they use to keep power is trying to make English the official language of the Untied States.
