Ashley Murphy, Blog 8

In my first blog, I blatantly said where I was from, and what I considered to be my home. I think this is appropriate of my current mindset, and will be for the rest of my life. I am very aware of how other perceive Southern culture and dialect, how I may pronounce things differently and move at a different pace of life. I wouldn't say I get made fun of for it, but people certainly take notice. I think it is also common for people to subconsciously perceive people with any accent, rather than an objective way of speaking, as ignorant or less intelligent. Unless someone speaks in clear English with no drawl or twang, well they probably don't know what they're talking about. For example, on the show Duck Dynasty, they have subtitles, but those people are millionaires!

I have learned more about my classmates and where they have come from. My favorite class activity or discussion so far has been the "mapping" of our origins and where we actually come from ethnically. It really helped me visualize us as a community. However, I really regret how several people were not in class on these days because it seems as though I don't know them as well.

As for a project proposal, I would like to revisit that activity and see if the class could remember where everyone was. Does it matter? What is the significance of where we are from? Perhaps to look at the class ethnically and differently. Discuss how class members think they are perceived and why they are perceived this way.
