Nathan Reese Blog Post #10: Dear Sexy Racy

Dear Sexy Racy

You have moved me in was that I thought was not going to happen. Honestly I expected the you to be a..."normal" race class. I have taken a few while at William and Mary, and generally speaking in those class students are expected to look at race from an outsider perspective. Students learn that effect race, but never really put yourself in inside the moment. Also I had no expectation as to where your sexuality/gender aspect of would take my mind.

I feel like the biggest thing you have taught me is to decenter my thinking when looking at another community. I, being a minority, incorrectly thought that all other minorities were treated the same, went through the same issues, and had the same goals as mine. You have taught me to think like an 1980s activist, "Don't let The Man hold me back". Yes I do say that partly in jest, but the sentient still holds true; the sentiment is don't let the hegemony be the only guide to your thinking. Your teachings should be very useful in any future endeavors of my life. Your teachings will be applied subconsciously, I think, in situations where I look at another community.

Thanks SexyRacy
